The IV World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly will be celebrated on Sunday, 28 July 2024.  The theme chosen by the Holy Father – “Do not cast me off in my old age” (Psalm 71:9) – is meant to call attention to the fact that, sadly, loneliness is the bitter lot in life of many elderly persons, so often the victims of the throw-away culture.

The first World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly was celebrated in 2021 and the Holy Father decreed that it be observed each year on the Sunday closest to the feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, Jesus' grandparents.

In this year of preparation for the Jubilee in 2025, which the Holy Father wishes to be devoted to prayer, the theme of the World Day is taken from Psalm 71, the plea of an

O IV Dia Mundial dos Avós e dos Idosos celebra-se no domingo, dia 28 de julho de 2024.  O tema escolhido pelo Santo Padre – «Não me rejeites na minha velhice» (Salmo 71, 9) – pretende chamar a atenção para o facto de, infelizmente, a solidão ser a amargura na vida de muitos idosos, tantas vezes vítimas da cultura do descartável.

O primeiro Dia Mundial dos Avós e do Idoso foi celebrado em 2021 e o Santo Padre estabeleceu que fosse celebrado todos os anos no domingo mais próximo da festa dos São Joaquim e Santa Ana, avós de Jesus.

On June 13, 2024, the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life held in Vatican the annual meeting with the Moderators of associations of the faithful, ecclesial movements and new communities. The World Apostolate of Fatima was represented by its international Secretary, Mrs. Edith Koch and by the Director of the Secretariat, Nuno Prazeres.  

The meeting revolved around the theme “The Challenge of Synodality for Mission”, bringing together more than 200 people from 95 international associations of the faithful out of the 117 recognized by the Dicastery. The day began with the celebration of Holy Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica, presided over by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life, followed by an audience with the Holy Father in the New Hall of the Synod.

On June 13, 2024, the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life will hold its annual meeting with the Moderators of associations of the faithful, ecclesial movements and new communities in the New Hall of the Synod in the Vatican. The World Apostolate of Fatima, an international association of the faithful, will also be present with two delegates.  

The theme of the Meeting will be ‘The Challenge of Synodality for Mission’. The Church, through the Synod on Synodality, is experiencing a prolonged time of consultation, reflection and dialogue to fully implement the synodal dimension, which is part of its nature as a mystery of communion, in the image of Trinitarian communion.
